“How do I keep my hummingbird feeder from getting moldy?”
First, this is unfortunately a problem with any and all hummingbird feeders, not just Sweet Feeders! Leaving sugar water in a small, enclosed space out in the summer heat is a perfect recipe for mold. However, we have some helpful tips to avoid this problem!
Tip #1
If possible, place your feeder in the shade! This makes a huge difference, as it slows condensation on the inside of the bottle, and also slows growth.
Tip #2
Refill your bottles regularly (at least every 2-3 days). This is where having a Sweet Feeder is a huge advantage over a traditional hummingbird feeder! You don’t have to waste nectar by dumping it out every time you need to refresh your nectar. Our bottles only hold enough nectar to last a few days, which is a good thing, because it reminds you to clean and refill your feeder with fresh nectar and bottles!
Tip #3
Clean your bottles before you refill them! This quick step prevents mold and bacteria from building up over time.
One easy hack for a Sweet Feeder is to buy extra bottles and then keep them in the fridge for an easy swap. That way, when you need to refresh your bottles, you just pull them out of the feeder and put them in your dishwasher, and then pop fresh bottles from the fridge right into the feeder! This rotation makes refilling so convenient!
